Organised Sound: An International Journal of Music and Technology

Call for submissions

Volume 13, Number 1
Issue thematic title: New aesthetics and practice in experimental electronic
music
Date of Publication: April 2008
Publishers: Cambridge University Press

Issue co-ordinator: Tony Myatt (am12@xxxxxxxxxx).

The December 2001 edition of Organised Sound 6(3) described a body of
compositions, sound installations, composers and artists who were creating
experimental electronic music in commercial domains. OS 6(3) focussed upon
the aesthetic innovations, contemporary uses and applications of technology
along with new economic operating circumstances for experimental music.
These developments generated a startling diversity of work, along with new
compositional processes and new forms of musical presentation.

Work continues to flourish in this area. Significant and important
compositions continue to be written in sub-genres such as digital
minimalism, noise music and within a variety of what are often termed
post-digital aesthetics.

Sound compositions which feature complex distortions and fragmentations of
sound, algorithmically controlled musical patterns and structures, data
auralisations and new approaches to recorded sound sources define much
experimental electronic music in the early part of the twenty first century.
Techniques of creation, production and distribution rooted in popular music
and culture, or methods of presentation normally used by gallery artists
often underpin the methods of many creators in this field.

This issue of Organised Sound seeks contributions relating to new
contemporary aesthetics in experimental electronic music. This could include
papers on:
€ audio works, albums or sound installations,
€ the work of individual composers and sound artists,
€ discussion of audio works with common aesthetic
foundations, € music dissemination and distribution methods,
€ aspects of live performance and music presentation,
€ discussions of contemporary philosophical thought relating to music and
sound art.

Papers on the work of the following indicative artists and collectives would
be welcomed: Autechre, Kim Cascone, Richard Chartier, Taylor Dupree,
Evol, Farmers
Manual, Mark Fell, Christian Fennesz, Gere Jenson, Gullibloon, Russell
Hasswell, Carl Michael von Hausswolf, Hecker, Rioji Ikeda, Stephan Mathieu,
Merzbow, Carsten Nicolai, Oval, Peter Rehberg, Terre Thaemlitz.

We invite submissions from composers, performers, artists and researchers
working in the realm of digital media and sound. Submissions related to the
theme are encouraged; however, those that fall outside the scope of this
theme are always welcome.

Deadline for submissions is 15 July 2007. Submissions may consist of papers,
with optional supporting short compositions or excerpts, audio-visual
documentation of performances and/or other aspects related to your
submission that can be placed onto a DVD and the CUP website for ³Organised
Sound².  Supporting audio and audio-visual material will be presented as
part of the journal's annual DVD-ROM which will appear with issue 13/3.
