What is the scope of the Digital Art Ontology? (01)
I feel we inherit much content from areas of art, music, architecture,
and technology. Computer Art would seem suited to the merging of
computer vocabularies with art vocabularies - cyber-aesthetics, random
beauty generator, artificial life, virtual gallery, non-linear
narrative. That said... (02)
Does the informational basis of digital arts make it something
qualitatively different - that's what ontology is all about. We don't
mix paint formulae, or combine traditional orchestral timbres
exclusively. Though photoshop inherits a lot of schema from painting,
while music software still toys with notions of orchestras and the
traditional idea of notes. (03)
Not to solve the big problems now, because I like to do that in
process, but my feeling is that we should start thinking from the
center out. In other words, from our practices outward. (04)
I teach classes in digital audio, media art theory. I'm involved in
emerging ontology issues which I believe to be vital to digital arts.
The web has always been at the center of our field. Semantics,
semiotics, code, virtual realties, autopoiesis (the closest word to
that in word net is autopsies) - all are our terrain; information,
technology, global brain... where does it stop. (05)
In practice, I might be talking about composition of sound/music in
terms of Kristeva and textwork. So I might meet the psycho-linguistic
crowd somewhere in Schema-ville(web), where we can join our ontologies
there. It is like brain surgery; we will be suturing conceptual
ganglia. Yet we can also depend on the merge button to eradicate
duplicate classes (I'm getting into methodology there). (06)
I think we should tunnel until we meet other people at the other end.
